Brief aan mijn zoons

15 april 2017

Voel ik me rijk

Wiegelied – 3 J’s

liefs Mama

Dear Youp and Bram,

It’s almost easter, yesterday it was good Friday. Well, mommy did not think that that Friday was that good, because we ended up in the AMC (Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam) again. We barely spent two days at home. But what did we enjoy this small time at home with the four of us. You both were very busy with each other, and every single time Youp was all smiles on Brams funny jokes.

But my dear boys, mommy is so proud of my 2 fighters. I hope if you both are grown up, you will continue to fight together, for each other and with each other. To support other people around you, that are dear to you or those who need it. Know, that your mom manages this all right now, because other people support us and fight for us. Because together you can do more than you can do on your own. And do not fight with your hands, of course! Although, I hope that next year or the year after you fight for a toy and I have to break apart. What a amazing moment that will be, when I have to tell you.. Playing together means sharing your toys?

It’s almost easter, and yesterday Bram and I watched a piece of “The Passion” together. (www.thepassion.nl) Because Bram, your favorite book to read is the Bible. You feel that Pontius Pilatius is a stupid man, and you feel sorry for Jesus that he should suffer like that! And that it is stupid that Youp is suffering from cancer. And you know what Youp, Mommy agrees with you. I think it is stupid that Youp suffers, but also that you are suffering. But life gives us what we can handle. And my dear boys, I wish it did not happen and would have wanted so many other things for you. As a mother you want to save your children for everything and now I can not take away your pain, your lonelyness or the sadness. But I will – together with daddy – fight until infinity to drag you through this. Whether we’re doing this the right way, we do not know because you know, when you’re daddy and mom, you do not get a textbook how to deal with a child who has cancer. If you look back later, I hope you will see that we have done with so much love, because we love you both so much, you are so wanted.

If you grow up later, I hope that your bond, which you build, will remain strong despite the distance. That your pain and sorrow brings you strength later in life, to become who you are, strengthen you in what you do. I hope that after this tremendous trial, life will be full of joy with a capital J. That you get everything out of life, LIVE, as if there is no tomorrow! I hope you dive into the pub, drink until your drunk, I hope you try to hit on some pretty girls (and that you get stood up!) I hope you can have a lot of friends around you, with whom you can laugh and cry, I hope you have an eye for people around you that need you, so that you can help them, as many people help us now.

Dear boys, I see so much of us in you both, but just a bit more beautiful, Bram your empathy for others, your unmatched sense of life around you, the love for animals, the interest in how everything works, the jokes. Youp you’re so small and brave, a fighter, with a clear will with what you do or do not like,  your love for music, and you want to keep laughing even though it’s heavy. What am I proud of you bot. And daddy? Daddy who was always so strict, but who has an infinite amount of patience with you both, countless kisses to give Youp to the side of his bed, always bent over the bed to laugh with you and play. Youp to be with you when mommy does not know what to do anymore when you cry out of pain. Dad who raised you, Bram, with a firm and consistent hand, now almost every sentence starts with “Darling” …. Always being through his knees  to listen to your story, and says, “He little man, when will I see you again?

Dear boys, sometimes I do not know what to say, and although I give everything, it never feels like enough. You are still so small and do so much. I could only …

“I betray you before going to sleep

Speak a good word and touch you lightly

Angel Choirs will later sing your name

Now you’re still such a little guy

And as long as you’re mine

I am for you and adjust my life

Do I make you happy

When you cry

I feel rich

When you smile at me

I break the iron with my heads

Feel wiser than the newspaper

from tomorrow

I will take care of you.
